About Luke Kennedy @mynameisLK

Luke is an accomplished Australian contemporary artist, lifeguard and surfer, born and based in the renowned Sydney suburb of Maroubra.

The inspiration for his unique pop culture and graffiti/tagging style of art was born from a childhood fascination of exotic lettering, patterns and bright colours.

Luke’s bold, expressive and playful work pays homage to the youth subcultures in which he grew up in and continues to explore: surfing, skating and music. Using a range of materials and mediums, his artwork spans across canvas paintings, drawings, surfboard & skateboard designs, stickers, signage, clothing and large-scale public murals.

Having won the Waverley Council commission for the North Bondi pool mural, Luke completed his artwork in the midst of lockdown 2020. The vibrant piece is already a celebrated and fitting backdrop to our iconic beach.

BONDI POOL - MYNAMEISLK

“I just wanted to translate the environment of Bondi Beach into a mural. To me, Bondi is a beautiful place, full of energy and unique diversity. Using bright bold colours and exaggerated gestural figures, I attempt to capture the impression of an Australian summers day at Bondi. Drawing from Matisse and Avery I use the paper cut out process and hard edge painting for a more playful and joyous response."

Where does your work take its inspiration from?

The world around me. Too many artists to list. Warhol, Haring, Matisse, Fairey, Reka, Cecster, Klops, Kuma, Tomcat19, All my Friends and New York style graffiti and culture. I have recently been taking inspiration from the natural environment and jungle.
